Sometimes Wisdom Arrives Because We Keep Walking: Renee Baribeau on A Pilgrim’s Guide to Walking Wisdom

A Speedy Metric Author Feature

What if finding direction during a difficult transition did not begin with having all the answers?

For Renee Baribeau, the answer can begin with something much simpler: walking.

In A Pilgrim’s Guide to Walking Wisdom: 11:11 Insights, walking becomes more than movement. It becomes a framework for reflection, attention, and navigating periods when the path ahead is uncertain. The book draws from Renee’s pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago and presents eleven insights connected to movement, mindfulness, self-discovery, and personal transformation.

We recently asked Renee how she structures a spiritual guide so that its framework remains useful without telling readers how they are supposed to interpret their own experiences.

Her answer gets to the heart of the book.

Giving Readers Structure Without Giving Them the Answer

Renee explained that the key is to provide readers with a structure without asking them to force their personal experiences into it.

That distinction is central to her approach.

During periods of upheaval, people can naturally want immediate answers. But Renee's perspective begins somewhere else: returning to the present.

As she puts it, walking provides both the framework and the grounding practice.

The physical rhythm is uncomplicated. One foot moves forward, then the other.

Yet that simple rhythm can create space to pay attention to what is happening in the present rather than becoming consumed by the uncertainty of what comes next.

From the Camino to the Page

A Pilgrim’s Guide to Walking Wisdom grew from Renee's experience walking the Camino de Santiago. Her own account describes the pilgrimage as a journey that invited her to release expectations, trust the path ahead, and embrace uncertainty.

The book's eleven insights emerged from that experience.

Rather than presenting the journey simply as a travel story, Renee uses the experience to explore broader questions about transition, purpose, connection, and inner direction.

Her website describes the book as a guide for people navigating life transitions, while also positioning the Camino experience as a way of exploring deeper connections with oneself, nature, and the divine. (Renee Baribeau The Practical Shaman)

Story, Reflection, and Practice

One of the most revealing parts of Renee's response was her explanation of how she moves between different forms of writing.

She describes the structure as a movement between:

  • Story, which creates connection

  • Framework, which offers orientation

  • Practice, which gives readers something they can actually do

That combination helps keep the book grounded.

The story allows readers to enter the experience.

The framework gives them something to consider.

The practical invitation then gives them room to engage with the idea themselves.

It is a structure that does not require every reader to have the same experience.

Leaving Room for Uncertainty

Perhaps the most important part of Renee's approach is what she deliberately leaves open.

She believes a spiritual guide should not tell readers what their experience means.

Instead, it should help them listen closely enough to discover that meaning for themselves.

That philosophy changes the relationship between author and reader.

Rather than presenting a single interpretation, the book becomes an invitation to pay attention.

The reader brings their own circumstances, questions, and experiences to the journey.

The book provides the path.

The reader determines what they discover along it.

When Walking Becomes a Way of Listening

There is a natural connection between walking and reflection.

When the body is moving at a steady rhythm, there can be an opportunity to step away from the pressure to immediately solve everything.

Renee's approach turns that ordinary physical experience into part of the book's larger framework.

The walk does not necessarily provide an instant answer.

Instead, it creates space for the question to be heard more clearly.

That idea is reflected in the central philosophy Renee shared with us:

“Sometimes wisdom arrives not because we have figured out where we are going, but because we have kept walking.”

It is a fitting expression of the book's approach.

The destination matters, but so does the act of continuing forward while the destination remains uncertain.

A Book That Can Continue Beyond the Page

The relationship between the physical book and walking also extends to the way Renee presents the work today.

Her audiobook page invites readers to take the book's wisdom beyond a traditional reading environment, describing the experience as walking with the book in hand and the wisdom in their ears. The page currently offers a book-and-audiobook promotion and explains that the complete audiobook is narrated by Audrey J. Williams. (Renee Baribeau The Practical Shaman)

That presentation fits naturally with the book's central concept.

The ideas are not confined to a chair, desk, or quiet reading room.

They can accompany the reader outside, where walking itself becomes part of the experience.

The Author's Journey After Publication

Renee also shared something interesting about what happened after the book was published.

Rather than immediately having all her attention available for promoting A Pilgrim's Guide to Walking Wisdom, she received a book deal shortly after publication and had to turn her focus toward writing.

Now, she is looking to give this particular book more attention.

That adds another dimension to the story behind the book.

Publishing one book does not necessarily mark the end of an author's creative journey. Sometimes another opportunity arrives almost immediately, creating a new set of priorities.

For Renee, that meant moving from the experience of creating A Pilgrim's Guide to Walking Wisdom into another writing chapter, while later returning her attention to helping this book reach more readers.
