A hurricane can be frightening enough in real life. In fiction, however, creating that same sense of uncertainty requires more than simply placing a storm in the background. In Tequila Sunrise, author Kim uses the unpredictable movement of Hurricane Rebekah to place Henry and Patrick in a situation where preparation is no longer enough.
What makes the storm especially effective is that its danger comes from its unexpected trajectory. As Hurricane Rebekah turned toward the coast in an area where people had not expected the major impact, many residents had either evacuated or stayed behind believing they were prepared. Henry and Patrick, both experienced with boating and water, also understood they were in the bay. What they did not anticipate was being caught in circumstances that would send their boat toward the bridge and one of them overboard.
Bringing Real Weather Into Fiction
For Kim, creating believable hurricane scenes began with paying attention to the real world. After moving to Florida in 2019, she became familiar with watching weather forecasts and tracking hurricanes. She has since experienced three hurricanes herself, giving her a personal understanding of the tension that builds as a storm approaches.
That experience became part of the atmosphere of Tequila Sunrise.
Kim describes the waiting as “perilous” and “tormenting,” with every passing hour bringing the storm closer. Even after the danger has passed, the consequences can continue, including the loss of power and the disruption that follows.
Rather than relying only on imagination, Kim also used real-time material while writing the novel. She turned to Facebook and asked people to share photographs showing what was actually happening around them.
“What better way to capture true happenings than with live videos or pictures?”
That approach allowed the fictional storm to remain connected to the reality of how hurricanes affect communities. The weather is not simply scenery. It changes what the characters can see, where they can go, and how quickly their situation can deteriorate.
A Small Detail Becomes a Lifeline
One of the most memorable elements Kim shared involves a bracelet invented by one of the boys. The bracelet contains a super-glow light that becomes unexpectedly important during the storm.
As the hurricane hunter flies through the eye of the hurricane again at night, he has an opportunity to descend lower and spot the boys' boat. The small light provides a way for the boat to become visible from above.
Kim describes this as her “McGyver moment,” and it captures something important about suspense writing: sometimes a seemingly small invention can become crucial when circumstances change.
The storm creates the danger, but the characters' ingenuity helps drive the story forward.
When the Storm Creates an Unexpected Hero
Kim deliberately keeps some of what happens next undisclosed, and for good reason. The events beneath the bridge eventually lead to an unsuspecting hero, adding another layer to the story without revealing the outcome.
That balance between giving readers enough information to understand the stakes and holding something back is part of what makes a storm-centered story compelling. Readers know the characters are in danger, but they do not know exactly where the situation will lead.
In Tequila Sunrise, Hurricane Rebekah becomes more than a weather event. It becomes a force capable of changing plans, overturning expectations, and putting characters into circumstances they never anticipated.
The Reality Behind Tequila Sunrise
Kim's own experiences with hurricanes give the novel's storm scenes an additional foundation. Watching hurricanes approach, experiencing the uncertainty firsthand, and observing the aftermath helped her understand the emotional rhythm of waiting for a storm to arrive.
That lived experience, combined with real photographs and reports from people experiencing the weather around them, helped bring a sense of authenticity to the fictional events.
For readers discovering Tequila Sunrise, the hurricane offers more than suspense. It provides the pressure that pushes Henry, Patrick, and the other characters into unexpected territory, where quick thinking, courage, and chance can suddenly matter.
And as Kim makes clear, there is much more beneath the bridge than she is willing to reveal.
About Kim and Tequila Sunrise
Tequila Sunrise places its characters against an unpredictable hurricane and explores what happens when preparation meets circumstances no one saw coming. Kim's use of real hurricane experiences, photographs, live reports, and carefully constructed fictional moments gives the storm a grounded quality while allowing the story to take its own dramatic direction.
For readers interested in discovering more about Kim and her work, the book provides a storm-driven story where the weather is not simply part of the setting. It becomes one of the forces shaping the journey.
